Reference Call

A reference call is a structured 1:1 conversation with someone who has direct first-hand experience with the topic of inquiry — typically a topic executive, target company or product. The most important distinction is between on-list references (supplied by the subject) and off-list references (sourced independently).

On-list references are useless for risk assessment because they're selected by the subject. They reliably produce positive signal. They're useful only for confirming baseline functioning or for surfacing benign anecdotes.

Off-list references — former colleagues, ex-direct-reports, former customers, partners — are sourced by independent researchers without subject knowledge of the selection. They produce the candid signal that on-list references can't.

Off-list reference programmes typically deliver 5-8 calls per executive over 1-2 weeks. Mixed cohort by relationship type (peers, reports, customers, partners). Compliance overlay protects both reference and subject from improper disclosure.

Reference calls are heavily used in pre-IC for VC and PE investments, in C-suite hiring decisions, in M&A diligence on key target executives, and in board-search processes. The signal value justifies cost when the decision is irreversible and large.

03/Frequently Asked3 questions
Q.01

Can I do reference work myself instead of paying for it?

You can, but you introduce bias and lose plausible deniability. Independent third-party reference work is more candid and easier to defend post-decision.

Q.02

How long does a typical reference programme take?

5-10 business days for a standard 5-8 reference programme. Accelerated 3-day options exist for live transactions at premium cost.

Q.03

What does reference work cost?

€8-20k per executive for a 5-8 reference programme. Pricing reflects sourcing effort to identify off-list references plus the actual interview work.
