Management Reference Check

A management reference check is a structured reference-call programme on a specific executive — typically conducted by an independent third party, using off-list sources (former colleagues, direct reports, customers, partners) rather than candidate-supplied references.

On-list references are largely useless for risk assessment because they're selected by the candidate. Off-list references, sourced independently, are the only honest signal you'll get on a senior executive's operating style, integrity and capability.

Typical engagement: 5-8 off-list reference calls per executive over 1-2 weeks. Mix of former direct reports, peers, customers and partners. Structured questions covering operating style under pressure, integrity, decision-making in ambiguous situations, and culture fit.

Most common use cases are pre-IC for VC and PE investments where the deal hinges on the CEO; pre-hire for senior C-level appointments; and pre-close M&A diligence on key target executives.

Done well, management reference work surfaces risks not visible in management presentations: integrity issues, interpersonal style risks that don't survive contact with the buyer's culture, capability gaps that the candidate has historically compensated for by selecting strong teams.

03/Frequently Asked3 questions
Q.01

Why not just call my own contacts?

Your own network introduces bias and politicises the process. Independent third-party reference work produces more candid answers and protects you from the perception of unilateral due diligence.

Q.02

Is reference work legal?

Yes, when conducted properly. References discuss their direct experience with the subject; they don't disclose confidential information that would breach NDAs.

Q.03

How much does it cost?

Typically €8,000-€20,000 per executive for a 5-8 reference programme. Faster turnaround (5-day vs 2-week) commands a premium.
