01Day 3

pg83/shitty

Repository · seen by GitHub, HackerNews

A terminal emulator built for low latency and fast startup, keeping terminal state on the CPU and rendering cells through Vulkan on Linux and Metal on macOS. The README publishes head to head throughput against ghostty, alacritty and kitty with every terminal equalised first, which is unusual enough to be worth noting. The same code ships under two names for people who would rather not type the first one.

Why it is here

Stars 228 to 259, up 13.6%, and open issues 3 to 4, while HackerNews comments barely moved. Third appearance, and this is where a thread and a trend separate.

02Day 2

veedstudio/open-edit

Repository · seen by GitHub, HackerNews

An open source video editing pipeline from VEED that has no timeline and no interface. Editing happens entirely through a coding agent: cut and reframe footage, layer motion graphics, turn slides or web pages into video. Source footage is optional, since stills and generated media are enough for some briefs. The renderer is free to use but closed, while everything driving it is open.

Why it is here

Stars 141 to 172, up 22%, and forks 8 to 12, up 50%. Forks outpacing stars again on the second day. At this size a dozen people move it, so the direction carries the information rather than the magnitude.

03New

googleworkspace/cli

Repository · seen by GitHub, Homebrew, npm / PyPI

One command line tool covering Drive, Gmail, Calendar, Sheets, Docs, Chat and Admin, published in Google's own GitHub organisation but explicitly not an officially supported Google product. It carries no fixed list of commands. It reads Google's Discovery Service at runtime and builds its command surface from whatever the APIs currently expose, so new endpoints appear without a release. Output is structured JSON, and 40 agent skills ship with it.

Why it is here

GitHub, Homebrew and npm all seeing it at once, and Homebrew is the one that counts. A package manager entry means somebody installed it deliberately rather than starring it in a browser tab. It carries no fixed command list, building itself from Google's Discovery Service at runtime, so it covers whatever the APIs expose today.

How to read this

Method

Every number here is a rate of change, never a total. Size is not news. The largest repository on GitHub is not rising, it arrived years ago. What this looks for is movement, and specifically movement that more than one unrelated source noticed on the same day.

That second condition is the whole method. Stars can be bought, backlinks can be built, app installs can be farmed. This project has already killed 2,601 domains for sitting inside link networks, one of which ran to 2,046 sites and covered 98% of everything it tracked on .it. All of them were manufacturing the exact signal one of these sources measures. Faking two unrelated signals at once is far harder work, so a repository seen moving by GitHub and HackerNews, or an app seen by the App Store and Google Play, counts for more than a bigger number in one place.

Whether two sources are genuinely independent is measured rather than assumed. Majestic ranks domains by backlinks and Tranco ranks them by traffic, and the two were treated as one voice for weeks. Comparing their daily movement across 83,000 domains showed no relationship at all, so they now count as two. Any pair that turns out to share data underneath gets folded back into one.

Entries are written to be read rather than scanned. When the evidence is thin, or the story behind it does not hold up, the entry is left out rather than published with a caveat.
