TAM, SAM, SOM

TAM is the Total Addressable Market — the maximum revenue a category could generate if every buyer used the product. SAM is the Serviceable Addressable Market — the portion that could realistically be served given product and geographic constraints. SOM is the Serviceable Obtainable Market — the share realistically obtainable given competition and go-to-market capability.

TAM is largely theoretical. It answers 'how big could this category ever be?' and is useful for setting investment-thesis ambition. It's most often misused as a substitute for SAM or SOM in pitch decks.

SAM is the more useful planning number. It answers 'how big is the market we could actually serve?' once you constrain by product capability, geography, regulatory access, customer-segment fit and language.

SOM is the realistic medium-term ambition. It answers 'how much of SAM could we realistically obtain in 3-5 years?' given competitive intensity, our go-to-market capability and our resourcing.

Common errors: presenting TAM as if it were SOM; calculating SAM by subtracting competitor share rather than by constraining the addressable population; treating SOM as a target rather than a ceiling.

03/Frequently Asked3 questions
Q.01

Which of TAM, SAM, SOM matters most for investors?

SAM and SOM. TAM signals ambition; SAM tests planning realism; SOM grounds the financial model. Pitches that lead with TAM as if it's SOM lose credibility quickly.

Q.02

How do I avoid double-counting in TAM calculations?

Define category boundaries strictly and document them. Most TAM-inflation comes from including adjacent categories the product doesn't actually serve.

Q.03

Should I size top-down or bottom-up?

Both. Top-down for sanity check; bottom-up for defensibility. Discrepancies between the two are the most useful diagnostic.
