Free Expert

A free expert is an operating professional who participates in expert-network consultations without payment — typically as part of a longer-term advisory, board or commercial relationship rather than an ad-hoc paid engagement.

Free expert relationships work where the engagement is part of a broader commercial context — a board seat, advisor relationship, vendor relationship, or peer professional network. The expert's participation is incentivised by the broader relationship.

For ad-hoc 1:1 expert-network engagements between strangers, free models produce systematically weaker results. Operators don't prepare seriously, decline more often, and provide less rigorous engagement.

Some buyers attempt to source experts directly through LinkedIn or professional networks at no cost. This works occasionally for adjacent contacts but doesn't scale; the network's sourcing infrastructure exists precisely because the unsystematised version is unreliable.

Where free expert work is appropriate: founder networks doing informal peer due diligence, professional services firms doing courtesy market research, academic researchers operating under institutional protocols.

03/Frequently Asked3 questions
Q.01

When is free expert sourcing acceptable?

When there's a broader commercial or professional relationship that incentivises participation, or when the buyer is genuinely under no time pressure and can absorb the lower reliability.

Q.02

Why don't all experts work free?

Time is money for senior operators. Free participation in ad-hoc calls is structurally low-priority work; paid work attracts more reliable engagement.

Q.03

Can free advisor relationships substitute for networks?

For specific decisions, sometimes. For continuous, structured intelligence work at scale, no — the network's sourcing infrastructure isn't replicable through informal channels.
